When I came into recovery, I was highly offended when I was told that I had to get honest. I am a good Christian woman, I was raised to be honest, how dare you. It didn't take long to find that I didn't have self-honesty. I could be too honest and hurtful to others, I was cash register honest, yet when it came to my denial and the extent of my disease, I lived in a fantasy, turned a blind eye, and didn't look at the reality of the situation.
Out comes the rose-coloured glasses, the mask, and the blinders so we don't have to look at ourselves in the mirror. We forget that this is a program of reflection, and as my sponsor use to say, "If you are in doubt about what you need to work on, look at who you are pointing a finger at."
