Delegating the Workload
Delegating the Workload
Exodus 18:1-27: “The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone” (v.18) Every morning Moses went to work managing the approximately 2,000,000 people in his care. The people stood in line from dawn until late at night to talk with Moses. When Jethro, Moses’ his father-law, came to visit, he said, “Moses, you’re doing too much. You’ll soon burnout at this pace.” Some of us, like Moses, are overcommitted. But we can admit our limitations, seek advice in establishing a plan, and learn to delegate the workload. There are limits to what we can accomplish on our own. One of the clues in Moses’ situation was that the people were waiting all day to get an appointment with him. Although Moses was responsible and caring, his organization was not running efficiently. When we are engrossed in our working, serving, and helping, it may be difficult to step aside, assess our needs, and develop alternative methods. But we can ask for advice. Another person may be able to see the situation more clearly and offer help. Jethro suggested that Moses appoint capable men to share his duties. We can develop a similar plan. Delegating our workload is acceptable with God. Lord, I can’t do it all. I know I need to relinquish being in control of every detail. Please help me establish a workable plan. Joan C. Webb
