Hypocrisy Will Catch You
Hypocrisy Will Catch You!
One woman moved with her family to a small town where everyone knew everyone else. She wanted to fit in with the other ladies, but it was difficult breaking into the “in” crowd. Most of them were well-to-do and just a little bit snobbish. When the announcement was made at church that there would be a cake sale, she thought that this might be the very thing she needed, as she was an outstanding cook. When her cake came out of the oven, she was horrified to see that the cake had fallen. Her heart sank, because she didn’t have the time or the ingredients to make another one. She thought and thought, then finally came up with a plan: she would find a way to "fix" the cake, then she would be the first one to the sale and buy her own cake back. Time was running out, and she needed to act quickly. She needed something to prop up the middle of the cake, then she could cover it with an extra thick layer of bright yellow icing. A roll of toilet paper was just the perfect size, so she put it under the cake and it looked great. She hopped in the car and took it to the bake sale, handed it through the door, then hung around until the sale started. She breathed a sigh of relief because it looked as though her little plan was going to work. As soon as the sale began, she would slip in and buy her own cake. Problem solved, right? When the doors were opened, she walked straight up to the tables where the cakes were. But as she looked and looked, there was no yellow cake! Someone had sneaked in before the sale and bought it. She frantically asked around, but the helpers couldn’t remember who bought it. She went home and felt absolutely horrible. That was it: they would find the toilet paper in the cake, trace it back to her, and the very women she had hoped most to impress would laugh at her the rest of her life. She didn’t have a whole lot of time to dwell on it, because one of the most important women in town was having a reception at her home that afternoon. When she got there, she almost fainted on the spot, because there, at the center of a brilliantly decorated table, was a bright yellow cake. She thought about just grabbing the cake and running, but then decided the best course of action was to pull the hostess aside and make up some something about realizing too late that she had left out a major ingredient. But as she got up to tell the hostess about the cake, she overheard someone complementing her. “That is simply the most beautiful cake I have ever seen!” To which the hostess replied, “Thank you, I made it myself.” --An old story, rewritten by Rocky Henriques
